Seasons
Jan - March
During these Winter month's we usually concentrate our efforts on getting "first tracks" at Bridger Bowl or Big Sky. Although the weather is cold, we do have breaks where the temperature can be conducive to good Winter fishing. Imagine skiing in the morning and fly fishing in the afternoon. What a day!
April - June
At last, the long Montana Winter draws to a close and we start gearing up for Spring fishing. It seems as though the fish are eagerly awaiting several month's of hearty food. We start to see the first baetis hatches on our area rivers and towards the end of April - the much anticipated Mother's Day Caddis Hatch. May is typically run-off but fishable options do exist. The much sought after Salmon Fly hatch is the next event - kicking off the Summer season.. Typically the rivers starts to recede around this time making fishing this hatch a real possibility.
July
Summer is officially here and Montana is alive with spirit. The day's are longer and the fishing is solid. We can still catch the tail end of the Salmon Fly and Golden Stone fly hatch. During summer, mid morning's and afternoon's are spent dry fly fishing with pmd's, green drakes and attractor patterns. When evening rolls around it's time to break out your caddis box. The options are unlimited.
August
One word. HOPPERS! Imagine floating down the Yellowstone or Madison casting this large morsel of food toward the bank or putting the twitch on the Jeff only to have a piece of the river bottom break away to crush your fly. Other fishing opportunities exist but this is terrestrial fishing at it's finest!
September - October
The Summer season is over and we once again have the rivers all to ourselves. This may be the most rejuvenating time to be in Montana. Cool nights and pleasant day time temps make for spectacular fishing. The Fall baetis hatch happens on many local rivers and streamer fishing for pre-spawn brown's can produce a fish of a lifetime.
Nov - Dec
Our time is generally spent focused on watching football and waxing our skis. Although we don't fish much during these month's there are window's where we can have good fishing - pending weather. It becomes a day to day prospect at this point but worth checking with us if you are in the area.
